Sky Ferreira's Favorite Things

Listen to Sky Ferreira on iHeartRadio

Singer-songwriter/model/actress Sky Ferreira released her debut album, Night Time, My Time, back in October, and for her, it was a long time coming. The 21-year-old began uploading songs to MySpace at 14, and although it took seven years for her debut album to drop, according to Sky, it was worth it. "I felt like for the first time, people kind of heard me," she tells iHeartRadio.

Even before the album hit the shelves, Sky's public persona was plagued with controversy, from an unfortunately-timed drug-related arrest to her own decision to appear nude on her album cover. But the mainstream is finally getting a dose of Sky, the musician -- she supported Miley Cyrus on the U.S.-leg of her Bangerz Tour and is currently opening for Miley abroad -- giving her a vehicle to share her brand of indie-synth-pop with the world.

When she was in New York City recently, Sky sat down with iHeartRadio to divulge some of her most favorite things. Check it out below!

Favorite time of night

It depends.  For myself, I like 1:00 in the morning if I'm at home by myself at 1:00 in the morning, but if you actually want to do stuff, probably like 9:30 pm... Then not everything's closed.  You can't go to the movies past like 10:00 or something.

Favorite thing about growing up in LA

My favorite thing about growing up in L.A. that I miss are swimming pools.  Actual swimming pools, not like kiddie pools that come up to your knees.

Favorite Michael Jackson moment

Basically, but I really painfully shy and I didn't talk to anyone.  I was always just kind of daydreaming to myself.  So my mom and I would have birthday parties at Neverland, but it would be all my brother's friends because I didn't know anyone, and I'd get excited and wander off.  He had his own movie theater but it had the original E.T. in it... There was also trampolines in the grass and the grass had speakers so it sounded like you were in a Disney movie or something.

He had a recording studio inside the movie theater but I didn't know that.  No one knew he was there and he came out.  I was sitting by myself and nobody was talking to me the whole day.  Yes, Michael Jackson like pops out. Michael Jackson walked out of the recording studio and I hung out with him.  He moonwalked for me and then I went to the recording studio and he showed it to me.  I got to touch the original E.T.

We sat in the movie theater and he was like, "Sing for me." The one song I remember singing so clearly, it's so embarrassing, but I did "Lucky" by Britney Spears... Out of all the songs you'd sing to Michael Jackson. I was like 7 though, to be fair.

Favorite place you've been naked

My album cover.

Favorite item in your Grandmother’s closet

I used to steal her dresses and cut them.  She was not happy about it.  She used to have all these floral baby doll dresses, but they weren't baby doll dresses.  I made them into that.

Favorite thing about being 21

It's weird, now that I'm of age, nobody ever asks me for my I.D.  Sometimes, because I don't wear makeup all the time, they think I'm like 13, and my boyfriend also looks really youn and they're like, we need to see I.D. I don't even have an I.D.  I have a passport and it's scary because I've lost my passport twice.  I mean I haven't lost it in like a year-and-a-half.

Favorite thing about the Bangerz Tour (so far)

It's nice touring with your friends.  It's nice being on tour with girls for once.  People get it, like,  'Oh, you want to do your makeup?' You don't have to go into the bar bathroom and do it and like dunk your head into some nasty sink to wash your hair... Also the energy, because everyone is so excited to see her. Her crowd's really cool about that.  It's not like opening for an Indie band or something, where everyone looks at you with their arms crossed and staring at you.

Favorite pop radio smash

I loved any Britney. I also loved Spice Girls.  I have to say, I think Britney Spears is my favorite pop star, if you're going to go super, super pop star, besides Madonna. The thing about Britney Spears isthere's something a little weird and dark about her obviously -- it's genuinely dark -- but I love how she's never changed or never tried to catch up.  I notice a lot of them get really weird and they try to catch up to the younger girls, or they're threatened in some weird way about that.  She embraces them; she always becomes friends with them and sings on their songs, but also she still f***ing dresses the same from like 2001.  She's still wearing her thongs outside her jeans.  That's why she's so much cooler that everyone else.

Favorite Concert

My favorite concert of all time I've ever been to was the Dream Within A Dream Britney Spears tour. My dad didn't have any money or anything, and for my birthday, it was a big deal that I even was able to go to a concert.  I wasn't able to unless my grandmother was working on one or something.  He took me and we had like top of the nosebleed section at Staples Center, and it was still the best night of my life because I could even see her from up there.

It was just so insane and she was so good.  I don't care if people were like, 'She's singing to track.'  Who doesn't?  That's the thing.  Back then, she was kind of untouchable.  I never got to experience the Beatles or even Michael Jackson when Michael Jackson was at his peak;  I never got to experience those things.  I always saw them when they were older, like the Rolling Stones and stuff like that.  Any band that I really love, I'd only saw them when they were over. I can say I saw Britney Spears. That's like the one I saw at her peak.

Favorite color you’ve ever dyed your hair

I'm always going to be a blonde.  I'm just doing this until my hair grows back.

Favorite city to get lost in

The thing about New York is you always find something.  L.A. is annoying to get lost in.  In New York, you'll always find a place to go when you get lost.

Favorite thing to binge eat

Candy, I love candy.  I don't know.  It's weird.  I think it's because I wasn't allowed to have candy, and I never thought about having candy until I was 19.

Favorite song to belt out when you’re alone

Sometimes I'll do weird songs that I wouldn't expect, randomly, that come into my head that I don't really know that well.  Yesterday, I started singing "Pure Imagination." It's like one of my favorite songs, but still my friend walked in and was like, "What are you doing? Singing Willy Wonka? Oh my God.'"

Favorite way to piss off your manager

Miss a flight.  Be late for something... be myself.  No, I'm kidding.  My managers now get it.  They understand.  The thing is, I'll do what I'm supposed to do.  I remember with other mangers I would get annoyed because they didn't protect me.  My managers now protect me and want to help me get bigger, but not compromise who I am to do so.

Favorite thing about being in love

Well, I guess now I feel less lonely obviously, even though it's very complicated and annoying sometimes and confusing.  It's like having a best friend with you at all times.

Favorite new artist

I really like King Krule.  I like what he stands for.  I think he's really cool.  In a pop-peer sense, I really like Lorde, who is so young, and she's so smart. It's good to have a voice and not be scared of it.

Favorite thing to waste time doing

I sometimes binge shop, buy stuff I don't need. I usually do online shopping because I still have insomnia. I go on eBay, kind of half asleep and just buy the weirdest stuff.  One day I woke up and I had a box of figurines and collectibles -- like Smurfs and stuff.  I was like what is this? I looked it up and it was from eBay. That's the kind of stuff I do.

Check out Sky's latest video for her song, "I Blame Myself."
